To register for any undergraduate programme, prospective students require one of the following:
Category 1
• Senior certificate with endorsement that holder has acquired the matriculation exemption.
Category 2
• If a candidate did not obtain full exemption from the matriculation examination, candidates have to meet the following requirements:
• Be at least 23 years of age;
• Have passed four (4) subjects with at least an “E” symbol or above in order to qualify for a conditional exemption certificates.
Category 3
• Candidates who do not qualify for exemption may only be admitted to degree/diploma, programmes provided they have reached the age of 45 as per the matriculation board requirement.
Category 4
Certificates from foreign countries:
Under this category, candidates holding matric certificates issued outside the Republic of South Africa shall only be allowed to register if they meet the following criteria:
• candidates have to be 23 years or older;
• Symbols must be in the A, B, or C range including English in the package;
• D and E are not accepted as pass symbols.
• Candidates under 23 years must obtain two subjects on A level.
Category 5
NB: REQUIREMENT FOR THE BSC DEGREE
• Matriculation endorsement/Senate discretionary exemption;
• Mathematics at standard grade with a symbol “C” or at higher grade with at least symbol “E”;
NB: SENATE’S DISCRETIONAY EXEMPTION
• A candidate with a matriculation certificate, but without exemption, may obtain equivalence to matriculation exemption at the University of Zululand by passing a foundation programme offered by the Faculty of Science and Agriculture.
Category 6
Policy on Recognition of Prior Learning:
To apply for recognition of Prior Learning as equivalent to formal programmes and/or courses to be considered for entry level degree or diploma acceptance, the following procedures apply:
• Writing of challenge examinations through the relevant departments (e.g. English).
• Presentation of results to the Qualify Promotions Unit for assessment and submission to the Senate;
In addition to these requirements candidates must also comply with statutory requirements relating to matric and conditional exemptions.
NB: candidates who do not qualify for exemption may only be admitted to degree/diploma programmes provided they have reached 45 years of age in the category as per the Matriculation Board requirements.
Registration
a) Students may register for a certificate, diploma or degree under a specific
programme (qualification).
b) Programmes (qualifications) are based on modules.
Modules with a total credit value, as indicated below, are required for the
following undergraduate qualifications:
Students must, at the start of each module, be able to obtain a module outline with (i) a study
time-table, (ii) the scope of material covered, (iii) prescribed works and/or study guides,
(iv) sample questions and (v) an explanation of the mode of assessment. All lecturers are
required to submit a copy of such documentation (or information where it could be obtained
or viewed , (e.g., using IT) to the Dean of the Faculty within the first week of each term.
Number of modules that may be registered for simultaneously in a specific term
a) Minimum of one module – mainly to make provision for part-time and occasional
students.
b) Maximum of six modules (two of which must be with the permission of the Dean).
Transitional rules (See also Faculty and Departmental Rules)
a) Each case must be considered on merit because some of the proposed qualifications
differ significantly from existing degrees and it is considered almost impossible to apply
‘rules of equivalence’ between new modules and existing courses.
b) Students in the process of completing their programmes for the purpose of a certificate, diploma or degree will be credited with module credits for semester programmes that
they have successfully completed on the following basis:
One ‘first year’ semester course : two modules (16 credits)
One ‘first year ‘ year course : four modules (32 credits)
One ‘second year’ semester course : three modules (24 credits)
One ‘second year’ year course : six modules (48 credits)
One ‘third year’ semester course : four modules (32 credits)
One ‘third year’ year course : eight modules (64 credits)
One ‘fourth year’ semester course : four modules (32 credits)
One `fourth year’ year course : eight modules (64 credits)
c) Credited modules must receive specific codes.
d) The relevant Faculty Board, on recommendation of the relevant Department, will
evaluate applications for recognition of modules successfully completed at other
institutions as credits for qualifications to be registered for at the University of Zululand.
Assessment
a) Assessment will be executed on a continuous basis.
b) At least 50% of the assessment should be based on written assignments, tests,
practicals, project reports, etc. which must be moderated.
c) Re-marking or re-assessment can be done on written request from the student
after payment of fees as required by the Senate.
d) Aegrotat assessments (examinations) are only permissible and arranged between
the lecturer and the student.
e) All material used in the assessment of candidates (scripts, assignments, practical
reports, etc.) must be kept on record for a period of five years.
Promotion rules
In order to pass a module, a candidate must obtain an average of at least 50%.
Pass level
a) To obtain the certificate, diploma or degree with a first class pass, a candidate must
obtain an average of at least 65%.
b) To obtain the certificate, diploma or degree with distinction, a candidate must obtain an average mark of at least 75%.
c) All prescribed modules comprising a qualification will be taken into consideration in
determining the pass level.
Examination and moderation
a) A first and second internal examiner must be appointed by the relevant Faculty Board for
each module.
b) An external assessor and an alternate must be appointed by the relevant Faculty Board
for each qualification.
c) The term of appointment of internal examiners and external assessors must be determined
by the relevant Faculty Board and updated annually.
d) The external assessor must submit a report on the overall assessment of the qualification
as prescribed by the Senate.
Evaluation of lecturers, courses, practicals and tutorials
a) Students must have the opportunity to evaluate lecturers and modules at regular
intervals.
b) The Deans must regularly supervise such evaluations with report to the relevant
Faculty Board and the Senate.
Prospective Students
